Michigan State University Marks Two Years Since Tragic Shooting

EAST LANSING, Mich. — February 13, 2025, marked the two-year anniversary of a devastating shooting at Michigan State University (MSU), which claimed the lives of three students and left five others seriously injured. The tragic events unfolded on the night of February 13, 2023, when a gunman opened fire inside Berkey Hall and the MSU Union Building.

The victims — Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraiser, and Alexandria Verner — were remembered by their peers and the broader MSU community during a somber observance on the second anniversary of the attack. Despite the profound grief, the MSU community has continued to show resilience and solidarity in the wake of the tragedy.

In a heartfelt statement, Junior Madilyn Warden reflected on the enduring strength of the campus community. “All of us may not know each other, but this night and for nights to come we all are, we’re Spartan Strong,” she said, emphasizing the unity that has emerged from such profound sorrow.

Ingham County 911, which received over 2,000 calls that fateful night, also took a moment to honor the victims. “For all listening agencies, we’d like to observe a moment of silence and remembrance,” announced the Ingham County Police Scanner, marking the gravity of the occasion.

Throughout the evening, MSU’s campus was illuminated in green — a color symbolizing the strength and resilience of the Spartans. The lights shone in honor of those lost and injured in the violence. “It’s really special to have all these buildings lit up green because it shows the significance of the lives we lost that night,” said Warden. “We were Spartan Strong before this, and we’ll be Spartan Strong after this.”

In a poignant display of remembrance, many members of the MSU community gathered at Beaumont Tower, laying flowers and candles in tribute to those lost. The act of coming together to mourn and remember serves as a testament to the university’s unwavering spirit, as students, faculty, and staff continue their journey of healing.

As MSU moves forward, the memories of the lives taken too soon will never be forgotten. The strength of the Spartan community, now and in the years to come, remains unshaken.
