City of Lansing opens applications for 2026 tree planting program

Lansing, MI – The City of Lansing announced that applications for its 2026 tree planting program are now open, with a deadline of Friday, January 30, 2026. The program offers free trees to residents, limited to one per household, for planting in city boulevards or private yards within city limits. Forestry Division staff will deliver the trees, while residents are responsible for planting and care.

The City’s Forestry and Grounds Division maintains city-owned trees, responds to emergencies such as fallen branches or storm damage, handles pruning and trimming, removes dead or diseased trees, manages roots and stumps when needed, and provides pest control. The division also assists with planting the State of Michigan Christmas tree each year.

Residents can report forestry-related issues through Lansing Connect or contact the Public Service Department at 517-483-4456. The city recently released a Tree Canopy Report detailing Lansing’s tree cover and related findings.

Applications and more information are available on the City of Lansing websit.
