LANSING, Mich. — An Eaton County sergeant and a deputy in training are being hailed for their quick response to an apparent suicide attempt near Potterville on Monday afternoon.
According to the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office, the two officers were en route to a separate call when they received an emergency 911 dispatch report about a young man attempting to hang himself from a tree near the intersection of N. Royston Rd. and E. Vermontville Hwy. Recognizing their proximity to the scene, the officers diverted their route to assist.
Upon arrival, the officers found the individual with a rope around his neck, “moments away from jumping,” the sheriff’s office stated. In a split-second decision, the sergeant and deputy took immediate action. The deputy positioned their vehicle beneath the individual, while the sergeant quickly scaled a nearby tree to reach the victim. Working together, the deputy held the man steady, and the sergeant was able to cut the rope, preventing a potential tragedy.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that the individual was unharmed and was transported from the scene for evaluation. Authorities have not released the individual’s identity, but their prompt intervention likely saved the person’s life.
In a statement, the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the importance of mental health awareness and support. “If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, help is available. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988,” the office stated.
