LANSING, Mich. — Eastbound and westbound lanes of I-96 were closed at the US-127 interchange on the southeast side of Lansing following a fatal crash that involved a car and two semi trucks. The incident, which occurred around 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, left one person dead.
Michigan State Police responded to the scene near Cedar Street, where a 2002 Toyota Avalon, driven by a 34-year-old woman from Flint, collided with two semi trucks. According to authorities, the Toyota was rear-ended by a 2019 Freightliner semi truck, driven by a 56-year-old man from Lansing, while traveling eastbound on I-96.
The force of the impact caused the Toyota to careen into the median, where it collided with a 2006 Kenworth semi truck traveling westbound. The Kenworth truck was operated by a 34-year-old man from Texas. Tragically, the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither of the semi truck drivers were injured in the crash.
At this time, police have not determined if alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Lansing Post of the Michigan State Police at 517-322-1907.
As of now, it is unclear how the crash occurred, and further updates will be provided as more details become available. Local residents are advised to avoid the area as authorities continue to investigate the scene.
