Fowlerville Woman Killed in Traffic Accident on Elm Road

Lansing, MI — A 62-year-old woman from Fowlerville was killed after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to readjust her belongings in the back of her van on Elm Road in Leroy Township.

According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 11:40 a.m. on December 14, when the woman was driving northbound on Elm Road with an unidentified passenger. Authorities say she stopped her vehicle suddenly to avoid hitting a deer that had crossed the road.

After stopping, the woman exited her van to reposition some items that had shifted in the back of the vehicle. While she was standing outside the van, a 44-year-old woman from Webberville, traveling in the same direction, swerved to avoid a collision with the stopped vehicle. However, the driver lost control and struck the Fowlerville woman, who was standing near the back of the van.

Emergency responders from Northern Ingham Emergency Services and a sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. They performed CPR and other life-saving measures, but despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead in the ambulance before reaching the hospital.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the woman, along with her daughter, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The names of the victims and their respective families have not been released.

Investigators have stated that both the pedestrian and the driver of the oncoming vehicle may have made evasive maneuvers in an attempt to avoid the collision. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extra caution when stopping on busy roads and to be aware of the risks of getting out of the vehicle on high-traffic highways. The sheriff’s office has not yet determined whether any charges will be filed.

The tragic accident serves as a reminder of the dangers of roadside stops and the importance of being vigilant, even in situations where drivers believe they are taking steps to avoid a hazard.

The investigation is ongoing.
