Lansing, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is warning residents about the heightened risk of wildfires this weekend due to forecasted warm and dry conditions across the region. The DNR urges caution, especially in southern areas, where dry vegetation could quickly ignite.
According to the DNR, the combination of high temperatures and lack of moisture has created the perfect environment for fires to spread. While the department acknowledges that many residents are eager to complete their spring cleaning and yard maintenance, it is advising against burning debris or performing other outdoor activities that could start a fire.
Jeff Vasher, the DNR’s Resource Protection Manager, emphasized the danger: “We understand that spring cleaning and yard maintenance is on everyone’s to-do list, but we urge residents to exercise caution. A small fire can quickly get out of control under these dry conditions.”
To ensure safety, the DNR is reminding residents to check whether burning is permitted in their area before starting any fires. If burning is allowed, the department advises keeping burn piles small, having a water source nearby, and keeping tools available to manage any potential flare-ups.
“If a fire escapes your control, it is important to call 911 immediately,” Vasher added.
As the weekend approaches, the DNR urges residents to prioritize safety and consider postponing burning activities altogether. With the fire risk at a high level, taking the proper precautions could prevent dangerous and destructive wildfires.
