Hunters in Mid-Michigan Donate Fresh Venison to Help Fight Hunger

Lansing, MI – In an effort to support those in need, deer hunters across Mid-Michigan are taking part in the annual Hunters Feeding Michigan program, sponsored by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). The initiative encourages hunters to donate their harvested antlerless deer to local donation centers, where the meat is processed and distributed to food pantries to provide nutritious meals for individuals and families facing food insecurity.

During the donation window of January 4-5, Knutson’s Sporting Goods in Brooklyn saw a steady flow of hunters bringing in their deer for the cause. This year marks the store’s first time partnering with the program. Owner Tobio Knutson expressed his enthusiasm about the community response, noting that the initiative not only helps those in need but also allows hunters to contribute in a meaningful way.

“The deer donation is great because this time of year, hunters already have the deer they need for themselves,” said Knutson. “So, this gives them the chance to donate to people who really need it.”

According to the DNR, each deer donated can provide an estimated 160 nutritious meals. The donations have a dual impact, addressing both food insecurity and environmental concerns, such as deer overpopulation, which has been rising in Michigan due to a steady decline in the number of active hunters since the early 2000s.

As Michigan’s deer population continues to grow at a concerning rate, Joe Presgrove, the coordinator of the Hunters Feeding Michigan program and DNR representative, emphasized the program’s multiple benefits. “It’s a way to help reduce vehicle collisions, support farmers, and address the overpopulation problem in southern Michigan,” Presgrove said. “And, of course, it helps fight food insecurity here in the state.”

While the program is making a significant difference in communities across the state, it also presents an opportunity for local businesses to engage with hunters. Knutson’s Sporting Goods, which stocks all the necessary hunting supplies, saw an influx of customers during the donation period. The store’s involvement highlights how local businesses can play an active role in supporting community initiatives.

This collaboration between hunters, local businesses, and food pantries underscores the power of community-driven solutions to tackle pressing issues such as hunger and overpopulation. Through programs like Hunters Feeding Michigan, the collective effort of the community provides much-needed relief to those facing food insecurity, while also contributing to the well-being of the environment and agricultural industry.
