Nobody knew about the two steel tanks buried behind Flat Rock Metal until one of them ruptured, splashing a slick of fuel oil into the neighboring Huron River and igniting a weeks-long inquiry and cleanup effort.

Response crews have removed 22,000 gallons of filthy water and gasoline, excavated 200 cubic yards of dirty soil, and begun monitoring for air pollution surrounding the polluted region since fishers reported the sheen on Feb. 21, according to a federal environment officer.
