Lengel: Michigan Democrats Owe Trump a Big Thank | Latest News!

If Michigan’s Democratic candidates cared, they’d write down this address: 1100 S. Ocean Blvd., Palm Beach, Fla. 33480, and send a box of Godiva chocolates or at the very least a KFC 16-piece family meal.

As you might expect, that’s Mar-a-Lago, the Florida estate of former President Donald Trump, the man who’s backed all the wacky GOP candidates in Michigan, and who’ll almost surely assist Democrats like Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Attorney General Dana Nessel win re-election.

It’s coming down to what was once the party’s fringe fighting to become mainstream, with Donald Trump’s support. Look no farther than the high-profile antics of Congresswomen Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert, the former guy’s twin fangirls. Yes, the same Greene who is afraid of the “Gazpacho Police” due to acid reflux?

It’s also the same Trump who wrecked the Georgia Senate runoff in 2020, handing a surprising victory to two Democrats.

Trump is endorsing Matthew DePerno for Attorney General in Michigan. DePerno has been waving the “Election Steal” flag for Trump, who has slammed his Republican opponent, ex-House Speaker Tom Leonard, for refusing to believe the big lie. Leonard is more qualified and level-headed, but Trump does not take that into account. In 2019, Trump nominated Leonard for the position of United States Attorney in Grand Rapids.

Trump is reportedly plotting to rig the presidential election in 2024 by endorsing election-tampering-friendly secretary of state candidates around the country.

In Michigan, he’s a supporter of community college teacher Kristina Karamo, who is running for Secretary of State against Democrat Jocelyn Benson.

Karamo is completely out of touch. She has promoted the myth that Trump won Michigan in 2020 and that the Jan. 6 Capitol attack was carried out by left-wing anarchists.

“Based on the data and my understanding of how these situations work, how these anarchists operate,” Karamo said in her podcast the day after Jan. 6: “I believe this is fully Antifa disguising as Trump supporters.” “After all, anyone can buy a MAGA hat, a T-shirt, and a Trump flag.”

And it appears that practically everyone who repeats Trump’s lies can count on his support.

That is something for which Democrats should be grateful.

Trump hasn’t said who he’ll support for the governor, but it’ll almost probably be someone who believes, or is prepared to appear to believe, the Big Lie. Ex-Detroit Police Chief James Craig, who met Trump in Mar-a-Lago last fall, has yet to say whether he believes the 2020 election would be rigged, therefore eliminating him from the Trump race.

Perry Johnson, a Republican businessman, attended a DePerno fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in the hopes of gaining the big man’s support.

Getting Trump’s support may win over the hard-core GOP faithful, but it will be a much more difficult sell in November’s general election. Some moderate Republicans are fed up with Trump’s poison and nonsense. They want to get on with their lives.

“Bottom line,” a GOP official told me the other day, “we’re going to lose every single one of these seats.” “This isn’t going to be a close race.”

“The Republicans are likely to win the midterm elections. Michigan, however, will not be one of them. “Our party is utterly splintered.”

Some see Michigan Republicans as embroiled in a civil war, fueled by Trump’s election rhetoric.

Then there’s party co-chair Meshawn Maddock, who violated protocol this week by endorsing her “personal” slate, further dividing the party.
