Jackson County Man Sentenced After Fatal Crash Involving Off-Duty Deputy

JACKSON, Mich. – The man responsible for the traffic crash that killed off-duty Jackson County Deputy Christopher Davis has been sentenced. Jack Pierson, 29, was sentenced to two years probation and 200 hours of community service for a misdemeanor offense related to the incident.

The crash occurred last May when Deputy Davis, 27, was riding his motorcycle at the intersection of Seymour and Mount Hope roads in Waterloo Township. Pierson struck Davis while driving, leading to the deputy’s death.

In a court appearance on Monday, Pierson expressed his deep remorse for the tragic event, addressing the family of the victim. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about you guys, the Davis family, friends, and how much he’s impacted the community and how much they’re going to miss him. And again, I’m very sorry,” Pierson said, visibly emotional.

Deputy Davis’ family, including his brother, spoke in court as well, sharing the devastating impact of the loss. “No more hearing his jokes or goofy laugh, no more calling him for advice. There is a piece of me and my family that is missing now, taken away by the actions of someone who is careless,” said Davis’ brother, holding back tears.

Davis, a dedicated officer, had been recognized for his bravery, earning the Star of Valor for saving the life of a fellow officer. Unfortunately, he did not live long enough to receive the honor. His death has left a deep void in the Jackson County community, where he was known not only for his work as a law enforcement officer but also for his warmth and kindness.

Pierson’s sentence, though bringing some closure, has sparked questions regarding accountability. While the probation and community service may be seen as insufficient by some, it reflects the legal framework surrounding the case. The family of Deputy Davis, along with the community, now face the painful reality of moving forward without a loved one whose life was tragically cut short.
