Lansing, MI — The Lansing Police Department is stepping up its efforts to prevent impaired driving this holiday season with the launch of the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign. Beginning Wednesday and running through January 1, the department will conduct increased patrols throughout the city, with a focus on deterring drunk and drug-impaired drivers.
The campaign is made possible through a grant that funds additional officers on the road during the busy holiday season, which often sees an uptick in alcohol-related incidents. According to the Lansing Police Department, more people tend to drive under the influence when they have time off work and are attending social gatherings with family and friends.
“More people are out celebrating, and it increases the chances that someone may drive impaired,” said Officer Tony Cena of the Lansing Police Department. “It’s kind of my responsibility to make sure that everybody’s operating in a safe manner and gets home safe.”
The increase in patrols comes amid troubling statistics. Last year, more than 40% of fatal crashes in Michigan involved drugs or alcohol. Lansing police are committed to reducing these numbers, and Officer Cena stressed that even a single impaired-driving fatality is too many.
The department is urging drivers to plan ahead if they plan to drink or use substances during holiday gatherings. “Never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or using drugs,” said Cena. “Instead, make arrangements for a designated driver or use ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft to ensure everyone gets home safely.”
By increasing visibility on the roads and encouraging safe practices, the Lansing Police Department hopes to make the holiday season safer for everyone on the road.
The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative is part of a broader statewide effort aimed at reducing impaired driving, saving lives, and keeping Michigan’s roads safe during one of the busiest times of the year.
