Law Enforcement Urges Caution as New Year’s Eve Sees Increased Drunk Driving Risks

Lansing, MI – As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, celebrations often include parties, festivities, and, for many, a few drinks. However, local law enforcement is reminding the public that the fun can quickly turn into tragedy if drivers choose to get behind the wheel while impaired.

New Year’s Eve and the early hours of New Year’s Day are among the deadliest times for motorists, with a significant uptick in drunk driving incidents. According to local authorities, this time of year often sees an increase in alcohol-related accidents, as people who may have planned to enjoy a drink or two find themselves in situations where they are no longer in control of their ability to drive.

Ingham County Sheriff Scott Wriggelsworth emphasized the importance of planning ahead. “A lot of times people plan to go out maybe have a drink or two in conjunction with New Year’s Eve, and then they find the night gets away from them. And then they get behind the wheel of a car hoping they can get home. That’s when the tragedy happens,” he said. “Not only for that person, but potentially for another family.”

With law enforcement agencies ramping up patrols to monitor impaired drivers, authorities are urging the public to take extra precautions. Drivers are reminded to be vigilant not only for other impaired drivers but also for hazardous road conditions, as winter weather can create slippery driving surfaces.

For those celebrating with alcohol, there are options to avoid getting behind the wheel. Rideshare programs like Uber and Lyft are widely available in the area, and AAA’s Tow-To-Go program provides a free ride home, even offering to tow vehicles to a safe location for those unable to drive.

As the New Year begins, local authorities are urging everyone to prioritize safety, reminding drivers that the consequences of impaired driving can be devastating. By planning ahead and using available services, everyone can enjoy a safer celebration.
