Livonia Man Dies After Ice Fishing Accident, Wife Killed in Separate Crash Days Later

Lansing, MI — A Livonia man has tragically died following an ice fishing accident last Thursday on an Addison Township lake, marking the second devastating loss for his family in less than a week.

Scott Christopher Levitan, 66, was taken off life support on January 1 after falling through the ice while out fishing with his 15-year-old grandson. The two were drilling a hole in the ice when it suddenly gave way, plunging them both into the freezing water. The teenager was able to call 911 and attempted to rescue his grandfather, but the ice broke once again, causing him to fall in as well. Fortunately, the grandson was able to escape the water and was treated at a local hospital before being released. Scott Levitan, however, remained in critical condition and passed away after being taken off life support.

The incident has left the family reeling from the tragic loss, with Sheriff Michael Bouchard offering his condolences: “Our prayers are with the family during this incredibly difficult time,” he said in a statement.

Just one day prior, Mary Lou Levitan, 66, Scott’s wife, was killed in a car accident. According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, Mary Lou was a backseat passenger in a vehicle that was struck by another car on Rochester Road near Beach Drive in Oakland Township. Authorities say the other car crossed the road’s centerline, causing a head-on collision. Mary Lou had been traveling to pick up her husband’s vehicle after the ice fishing accident when the crash occurred.

Two other individuals, a 62-year-old Clarkston man and his wife, were also injured in the crash and taken to the hospital. The condition of the other passengers remains unknown, and the cause of the vehicle crash is still under investigation.

This series of tragedies has left the Levitan family grieving, with two lives lost in a span of just 48 hours. The community is offering their support as the family navigates these devastating events.
