Michigan Attorney General Warns Against Illegal “Skill Games”

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan consumers are being warned about a rising trend of illegal gambling machines, commonly referred to as “skill games,” which are beginning to make an appearance in various businesses across the state. Attorney General Dana Nessel has issued a public advisory, cautioning that these machines are being marketed as games of skill, but in reality, they operate as games of chance in violation of Michigan law.

The machines in question are designed to resemble traditional casino slot machines, featuring multiple wheels and symbols such as cherries, sevens, and bars. Players insert cash or credits to spin the wheels, and in some cases, are given the ability to adjust a wheel to line up the symbols. While these machines appear to offer a skill-based element, Nessel explained that the outcomes are actually predetermined or generated by a random number system, making them no different from a typical slot machine.

Under Michigan law, gambling machines must not mislead players about their nature or odds. Misleading claims, like those promoted by these so-called “skill games,” are prohibited. As a result, these machines are illegal in the state.

Businesses found operating such machines can face serious legal consequences. The Michigan Consumer Protection Act (MCPA) empowers the state to pursue criminal charges, impose civil penalties, and even revoke business licenses for violators. Repeat offenders could be fined up to $25,000 per violation. Additionally, consumers who have lost money on illegal machines may have grounds to file a lawsuit for restitution.

Nessel emphasized the importance of consumer awareness in the fight against these deceptive practices. She encouraged anyone who suspects illegal gambling to report it to the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB), which is actively monitoring and investigating reports of unlawful gaming activity across the state.

The rise of these machines serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts to protect Michigan residents from gambling-related fraud and misconduct. As authorities continue to crack down on such operations, consumers are urged to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities.

For those looking to file complaints or report illegal gambling activities, the Michigan Gaming Control Board offers resources on their website and through their dedicated hotline.
