Michigan Man Found Guilty of Attempted Murder, Escaping Police Custody

Lansing, MI – Jeremy William Shepard, a man from Mason, Michigan, was found guilty on Monday of multiple serious charges, including Assault with Intent to Murder, Unlawful Imprisonment, and Felony Firearm, in connection with a 2023 shooting. Shepard’s conviction stems from a violent incident that occurred on June 24, 2023, in Aurelius Township.

Shepard, along with two accomplices, Dustin Urie and his wife Kristen Shepard, was involved in the shooting of a man during a confrontation. Authorities say the victim was lured to an address in Aurelius Township, where the suspects shot him. While the victim survived, he sustained life-altering injuries.

In addition to the conviction related to the shooting, Shepard’s trial was marred by a dramatic escape. On November 27, 2024, during his ongoing trial, Shepard managed to escape from police custody at the 30th Circuit Court. While under a GPS monitoring ankle tether, Shepard fled the courthouse, cut off the tether, and attempted to flee the state. His escape triggered a statewide alert, leading to a high-speed car chase, which culminated in his arrest. Police found Shepard in possession of multiple firearms, homemade suppressors, camouflage gear, and body armor in his vehicle.

In a statement from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, it was confirmed that Shepard’s escape would lead to additional charges, though the details of these charges are still being pursued. Shepard’s wife, Kristen, was convicted of Accessory After the Fact to Assault with Intent to Murder and Tampering with Evidence for her role in the crime.

Dustin Urie, who was also involved in the shooting, was found guilty of Assault with Intent to Murder, Unlawful Imprisonment, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Felony Firearm. He now faces the possibility of life in prison.

The three defendants are scheduled for sentencing on December 30, 2024.
