LANSING, MI – Michigan Democratic Representative Shri Thanedar has introduced articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump, citing a series of actions he believes undermine democracy and violate the U.S. Constitution. In an announcement made Monday, Thanedar expressed his deep concern over the president’s behavior, which he argues has escalated to a point where impeachment is necessary.
“I have introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump,” Thanedar said in a post on social media. “When Trump ignores the Constitution, Congress, and the courts, he is not ‘fighting for America.’ He is tearing it down and endangering our democracy.”
Thanedar’s resolution includes seven articles of impeachment, accusing the president of various actions that he argues represent a gross abuse of power. Among the charges are the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was mistakenly sent to El Salvador despite being a U.S. resident, and the unilateral cuts to government funding by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) without congressional approval.
Despite the strong language and public outcry from Democrats, the articles of impeachment are unlikely to gain significant traction in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. Under the U.S. Constitution, the House votes on whether to impeach a president, but with Republicans holding a majority, it is improbable that any impeachment effort would succeed without cross-party support. A two-thirds majority in the Senate would also be required to convict a president, and with Republicans in control there as well, the chances of a successful conviction remain slim.
Still, Thanedar’s bold move highlights the growing frustration among Democrats with Trump’s actions during his presidency. The congressman pointed to a recent Supreme Court ruling in the case of Garcia, in which the court unanimously rejected the deportation decision, and criticized the president for disregarding the ruling. Thanedar sees this as the final straw, signaling that Trump’s actions have gone beyond typical presidential misconduct.
“Donald Trump has already done real damage to our democracy, but defying a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling, that has to be the one final straw,” Thanedar stated. “It’s time we impeach Donald J. Trump.”
Among the charges listed in the articles of impeachment are Trump’s controversial tariff policies, which have had significant impacts on global markets, as well as his ongoing attacks on the media and the First Amendment. Thanedar also raised concerns about alleged bribery and corruption within the justice system, along with the president’s handling of Americans’ personal data.
The seventh article focuses on what Thanedar describes as Trump’s “tyrannical overreach,” accusing him of attempting to consolidate unchecked power and erode the constitutional limits of the presidency.
“In this country, we have presidents, not kings. That’s not just misconduct. It’s impeachable misconduct,” Thanedar argued.
Thanedar’s announcement comes at a time when concerns have been raised about Trump’s political future. The Trump Organization recently unveiled “Trump 2028” merchandise in support of his potential run for a third term, which many Democrats view as further evidence of his desire to bypass constitutional limits on presidential terms.
“If we let this stand, we are saying the president is above the law. That the United States Constitution is optional,” Thanedar said. “I won’t be silent and I’m calling on all my colleagues, Democrats, Republicans, and independents, to stand up with me.”
While it remains unlikely that the articles of impeachment will gain momentum in the current political climate, Thanedar’s actions signal the deepening divisions between Democrats and the Trump administration, as well as a growing sense of urgency within the party over the president’s conduct in office. As calls for accountability continue to rise, it is clear that the debate over Trump’s legacy will continue to shape the political landscape in the months and years ahead.
