Slippery Conditions Challenge Drivers on Michigan’s Gravel Roads

Lansing, MI – As winter weather continues to impact roadways across Michigan, drivers are facing dangerous conditions on gravel and dirt roads. With snow melting during the day and temperatures dropping at night, roads are becoming icy, creating hazards for motorists. Michigan State Police Lieutenant Rene Gonzalez warned that these conditions are particularly challenging for gravel roads, which can become especially slippery due to their lack of traction.

On Tuesday, the Clinton County Road Commission took to social media to highlight the difficulties in maintaining gravel roads during the cold months. They acknowledged the struggle of keeping roads in optimal condition, particularly as temperatures fluctuate. “The main thing we tell drivers is don’t panic if you start losing control of your vehicle,” Lieutenant Gonzalez stated. “But a lot of people have an instinct of just hitting the brake, and once you apply that brake, you lose control of your vehicle completely.”

While icy roads are dangerous on any surface, gravel roads present an added challenge. The combination of ice and the loose nature of gravel exacerbates the potential for drivers to lose control. As temperatures drop, the ice accumulates, making the situation even more hazardous.

In these conditions, experts advise drivers to remain calm and adjust their actions if they begin to skid. “If you lose control of your vehicle, take your foot off the gas, do not apply the brake, steer your vehicle in the direction you want to go, and focus on that location,” said Gonzalez. “As your tires begin to regain traction, you’ll start to feel control return, and you can slowly accelerate out of the spin.”

The Clinton County Road Commission has also warned of potential delays as they work to address the challenges presented by the weather. Drivers are urged to take extra caution when traveling on gravel roads, particularly in the evening and early morning hours when temperatures are most likely to cause icy conditions.
