Michigan Electors Gather to Cast Votes for Trump and Vance in 2024 Presidential Election

Lansing, MI – Michigan’s 15 electors convened Tuesday at the state Capitol to cast their votes in the 2024 Presidential Election, formally sealing the state’s support for the Republican ticket of Donald Trump and JD Vance. The meeting is a key step in the nationwide Electoral College process, culminating in the official election of the President and Vice President of the United States.

The electors, who were selected based on the outcome of Michigan’s November election, voted in accordance with the state’s popular vote, which showed a decisive win for Trump and Vance. With Michigan holding 15 Electoral College votes, the Republican duo was expected to receive all of the state’s electoral ballots, marking a significant win in their bid for the White House.

Ahead of the vote, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson met on December 3 to sign the state’s “Certificates of Ascertainment,” a legal document affirming the electors’ legitimacy. The certificates officially declare Michigan’s electors, ensuring that their votes will be counted when Congress formally certifies the results in early January.

“This is a critical moment in ensuring that the will of the Michigan voters is upheld,” said Governor Whitmer during the signing of the certificates. “The Electoral College process is an integral part of our democracy, and we are committed to seeing it carried out fairly and transparently.”

Michigan’s role in the 2024 election is particularly significant, given its status as a key battleground state in previous elections. The state, which flipped to Trump in 2016 but returned to the Democratic column in 2020, has again become a focal point of national attention as both major parties vie for its electoral votes.

While the outcome of Michigan’s electoral process was largely expected, the gathering of electors at the Capitol remains a ceremonial yet important event in the election cycle. Following the vote, the electors’ ballots will be sent to the U.S. Congress for final certification. If the results stand, Trump and Vance will officially secure the necessary 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

Michigan’s electors are part of the larger nationwide effort to finalize the 2024 election, which will culminate in the inauguration of the next President and Vice President on January 20, 2025.
