LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered that U.S. and Michigan flags be raised immediately for the remainder of Inauguration Day, following a presidential proclamation issued by President Trump. This directive comes after a day of national observance and ceremonial events marking the new presidential term.
In a statement released to the public, Governor Whitmer confirmed that flags will return to half-staff on Tuesday, January 22, 2025, to continue the 30-day period of mourning for the passing of former President Jimmy Carter. The flags will remain at half-staff through Monday, January 27, 2025.
As per standard protocol, the process of lowering flags to half-staff requires them to first be hoisted to the peak for an instant before being lowered to the half-staff position. This procedure is reversed when flags are taken down at the end of each day.
The extended period of flag honors for President Carter follows his death and serves as a symbol of respect for his legacy and contributions to the nation.
