LANSING, Mich. — Governor Gretchen Whitmer has issued a sharp response to former President Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs, warning that the 25 percent tax would exacerbate economic challenges for Michiganders. In a statement, Whitmer emphasized that the state’s working-class families, already grappling with high costs of living, would face even greater financial strain if the tariffs are enacted.
“The last thing Michiganders need right now is higher costs,” Whitmer said. “A 25 percent tariff will hurt American auto workers and consumers, raise prices on cars, groceries, and energy, and put countless jobs at risk.”
The governor underscored the potential ripple effects of the tariffs, noting that the increased costs would be passed on to consumers by businesses, raising the prices of essential goods. She specifically pointed to the impact on everyday expenses, including heating homes during Michigan’s harsh winter months, fueling vehicles, and securing affordable housing—all at a time when inflation remains high.
Whitmer also expressed concern about the harm these tariffs would inflict on Michigan’s auto industry, a vital sector for the state’s economy. She explained that rising tariffs could drive up car prices and slow production lines, jeopardizing the stability of an industry critical to the region’s financial health.
