Jackson Police Department Welcomes New Chief, Christopher Simpson

Jackson, MI — The City of Jackson is preparing for a significant change in leadership within its police department as Christopher Simpson is set to take over as the next Police Chief. Simpson will step into the role following the retirement of current Police Chief Elmer Hitt, who has dedicated nearly three decades to the force.

Simpson, a lifelong resident of Jackson, brings 25 years of experience with the Jackson Police Department. After retiring as a lieutenant and division commander in 2017, Simpson transitioned to his current role as Undersheriff with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. His decision to return to the City of Jackson as Police Chief reflects his desire to make a more direct impact on the community he has served for so many years.

“It was always my goal to become Chief of Police for the City of Jackson,” Simpson said. “I’m proud to retire as a Lieutenant, but I feel I can be more impactful working for the City of Jackson as Chief of Police. My focus will be on ensuring the safety of Jackson’s citizens while maintaining a highly trained, professional, and ethical police department.”

In his new role, Simpson plans to assess the current state of the Jackson Police Department and make any necessary adjustments to improve internal operations and strengthen the department’s ability to serve the community.

The transition of leadership comes as Chief Elmer Hitt steps down after 29 years of service, including the last eight years as Director of Police and Fire Services. Hitt, who began his law enforcement career with the Jackson Police Department as an 18-year-old out of high school, reflected on his time in service with gratitude and a sense of accomplishment.

“It was truly an honor to serve the City of Jackson,” Hitt said in a statement. “I will forever be grateful for the support and guidance I’ve received throughout my career. Law enforcement has been a fulfilling career, and while I will miss it, I am ready to move on to the next chapter of my life.”

Mayor Daniel Mahoney expressed his deep appreciation for Chief Hitt’s dedicated service to the city, praising his leadership and contributions to public safety. The mayor also voiced his excitement about Simpson’s appointment, citing their long-standing professional relationship.

“I’ve known Christopher Simpson since he was a Patrol Officer, and I have a strong working relationship with him,” Mayor Mahoney said. “I am excited for the future of the Jackson Police Department under his leadership. I believe he will continue to strengthen the relationships between law enforcement and the community.”

As Simpson prepares to assume his new role, the Jackson Police Department is entering a new era of leadership, with a focus on continued community engagement and a commitment to ethical policing.
