Jackson Swears In New Police Chief Christopher Simpson

JACKSON, Mich. — The City of Jackson officially welcomed Christopher Simpson as its new police chief during a recent swearing-in ceremony. Simpson, a lifelong Jackson resident with decades of law enforcement experience, is poised to take on the leadership role, succeeding long-time Police Chief Elmer Hitt.

In his remarks following the swearing-in, Simpson reflected on his journey and the unexpected nature of the appointment. “I never in a million years would imagine that this was God’s plan, and I fall to that because that’s exactly what it is,” he said.

Simpson has an extensive background in law enforcement, most recently serving as the Jackson County Undersheriff since 2020. His connection to the Jackson Police Department spans 26 years, a career that laid the foundation for his deep-rooted commitment to the community.

The transition marks the end of Hitt’s nearly three-decade tenure with the city. Hitt, who is set to retire on February 21, 2025, served as the Director of Police and Fire Services. Chief Simpson expressed admiration for his predecessor’s leadership, noting, “To see him leave on such a good note is very gratifying. He did a fantastic job as Chief of Police.”

Simpson has expressed a clear vision for his leadership. One of his primary goals is to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the Jackson community. “People want to feel safe in their communities. I know I do,” Simpson said. “A part of that responsibility is the police department, but it’s not all of our responsibility. A lot more of that responsibility is our community in itself.”

With his official first day set for February 22, Simpson is eager to continue the work started by Chief Hitt and build upon the strong foundation already in place. The Jackson community can look forward to a new chapter of leadership and collaboration under his guidance.
