Lansing, Mich. — A Lansing man has been charged with manslaughter in the death of a 20-year-old Fowlerville resident following an assault earlier this year. The Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office announced the charge against David Gaines Jr., 24, who was arraigned Thursday.
The incident took place on January 18, around 1:30 a.m., when East Lansing police responded to reports of an assault outside a restaurant located in the 300 block of E. Grand River Ave, near the M.A.C. Avenue intersection. The victim, Caleb Alan Shermoe, was found injured at the scene and was quickly transported to Sparrow Hospital for treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Shermoe, a Fowlerville resident, succumbed to his injuries several days later, passing away on January 23.
Authorities indicated that video footage from the scene of the assault had been recovered and is believed to be key evidence in the investigation. Following an investigation, Gaines was arrested and charged with manslaughter, a charge that carries serious legal consequences.
Gaines’ probable cause conference is set for March 28 at 8:30 a.m., and a preliminary examination is scheduled for April 3 at 9 a.m. He has been granted a bond of $50,000, which can be paid in cash or through a surety bond.
This case remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the circumstances surrounding Shermoe’s tragic death. The community continues to await further developments as the legal process moves forward.
