Michigan Launches Nurse Loan Repayment Program to Address State’s Nursing Shortage

LANSING, Mich. — In a move aimed at alleviating the state’s nursing shortage, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has announced the launch of a new Nurse Loan Repayment Program. The program offers financial relief to nurses by providing up to $300,000 in tax-free funds to help pay off student loan debt.

This initiative, which has a total of $9 million available for disbursement, is designed to attract and retain nursing professionals in the state. Nurses who work at state psychiatric facilities will be eligible to have their loans repaid over a period of four years, while those employed at other eligible practice sites can receive repayment over the course of up to 10 years.

“Nurses are the backbone of the health care system, providing essential care to patients in hospitals, clinics, schools, and homes,” said Elizabeth Hertel, director of MDHHS. “Health care facilities across the state are facing nursing shortages, and this loan repayment program will help providers recruit and retain nurses to deliver vital care to patients.”

The program is open to nurses who are willing to commit to working in eligible settings, including non-profit health care facilities and public schools. Applicants must agree to work a minimum of 40 hours per week for at least 45 weeks each year and remain in their positions for at least two years.

Applications for the Nurse Loan Repayment Program are now open, with a deadline of June 4. Interested applicants can visit the program’s official webpage for more information and to apply.

By providing significant financial support to nursing professionals, the state hopes to address critical staffing shortages and ensure that Michigan residents continue to receive quality health care.
