JACKSON, Mich. — A 40-year-old homeowner was arrested Monday morning after allegedly shooting a man who had broken into his home. The incident occurred in the 300 block of North Gorham Street around 5:44 a.m., according to Jackson police.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting and found a 47-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his neck. The victim, who police believe is homeless, was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Police say the man had broken into the house through a basement window before being confronted by the homeowner. The intruder, who reportedly believed the home was vacant, was walking up the stairs when he encountered the homeowner, leading to a confrontation in which the homeowner fired a handgun.
Following the shooting, the homeowner was taken into custody for questioning. Authorities also conducted a search of the residence for evidence related to the investigation. However, the homeowner was later released, and the investigation is ongoing.
While police have not yet clarified whether the shooting was an act of self-defense, the case is being closely examined as part of the broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The shooting has raised questions about homeowners’ rights in situations involving intruders and the legal implications of using force in such encounters. Police are continuing to gather information to determine the full sequence of events.
Further details will be provided as the investigation develops.
