Michigan – Governor Gretchen Whitmer released a statement following the announcement that former Michigan House Speaker Joe Tate will not seek re-election.
Whitmer described Tate as a committed public servant and noted his historic role as the first Black Speaker of the Michigan House.
She highlighted their work together on legislation that included tax cuts for families and retirees, free meals for public school students, clean energy initiatives, gun violence prevention measures, and reproductive health policies.
The governor praised Tate’s leadership, emphasizing his focus on serving residents and advancing policies aimed at improving lives across the state.
She also wished him and his family well as he moves on from his legislative career.
