AARP Michigan says nursing home cases of coronavirus continue to increase

The latest update of the AARP Nursing Home COVID-19 Dashboard finds Michigan’s nursing homes continue to face concerning trends, including sharply increasing resident and staff cases and resident deaths, rising staff shortages, and continuing but slightly decreasing shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE).

the four weeks analyzed, October 19 to November 15, AARP’s dashboard reports that Michigan nursing homes had:

  • 5.2 new COVID-19 cases per 100 residents, up from 1.9 in the previous four-week period;
  • 0.9 COVID-19 deaths per 100 residents, up from 0.34;
  • 41.8% of nursing homes with staffing shortages, up from 36.3%;
  • 6.2 new staff COVID-19 cases per 100 residents, up from 2.5;
  • 20.4% of nursing homes without a 1-week supply of PPE, down from 25.9%

“With coronavirus surging across the country, nursing home residents remain in grave danger as the virus reenters nursing homes and other facilities at an alarming pace,” said AARP Michigan State Director Paula D. Cunningham. “Some facilities continue to have shortages of staff and PPE needed to keep residents and workers safe, and stop the spread. Action must be taken now to save lives.”

Cunningham added, “AARP will continue fighting to protect nursing home residents now and offering solutions to improve our long-term care system for the decades to come.”
