Charges Upgraded to Open Murder in Lansing Shooting Death

LANSING, Mich. — The five suspects arrested in connection to the fatal shooting of 21-year-old Jaivion Husband in Lansing now face upgraded charges of open murder, according to Ingham County Prosecutor John J. Dewayne.

Husband was shot in the head on Monday, January 27, and later succumbed to his injuries. Officers responded to a shots-fired call that day, finding a car believed to be involved in the shooting near the intersection of W. Willow St. and N. Grand River Ave. Police quickly arrested five individuals in connection with the incident.

Initially, the suspects faced multiple charges, including two counts of assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle causing serious injury, carrying a concealed weapon, and three counts of felony firearm. However, following Husband’s death, the prosecutor’s office has reauthorized the criminal charges, now upgrading all five suspects to open murder.

In addition to the open murder charge, the suspects also face one count of assault with intent to murder, discharging a firearm from a motor vehicle causing serious injury, carrying a concealed weapon, and three felony firearm charges.

Three of the five suspects had previously posted bond on their initial charges. However, in light of the upgraded charges, the prosecutor’s office is requesting that these individuals be held without bond as the case moves forward.

The investigation remains ongoing, and the community continues to mourn the loss of Jaivion Husband.
