Lansing, MI — Authorities are investigating a double homicide that occurred Saturday afternoon in Leoni Township. The Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety responded to a call just before 2:00 p.m. after reports of two deceased individuals at a residence on the 6900 block of Welch Lake Road.
Upon arrival, officers discovered the body of a 57-year-old man in the driveway. A further search of the property led to the discovery of a second body, that of a 70-year-old woman. The identities of the victims have not yet been released, and police have not specified the causes of death.
Investigators also noted that a vehicle belonging to one of the victims was missing from the scene. Using the vehicle’s license plate number, law enforcement traced the car to the Village of Brooklyn, approximately 15 miles from the crime scene. Columbia Township Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver—a 40-year-old man—fled before coming to a stop. He was detained and taken into custody as part of the investigation. The man is currently lodged at the Jackson County Jail, awaiting charges that will be reviewed by the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Police have indicated that they believe the incident was isolated and that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The investigation is being led by the Blackman-Leoni Department of Public Safety’s Detectives Bureau, with assistance from the Michigan State Police Crime Lab.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they continue to piece together the details surrounding the crime.
As the investigation remains ongoing, police have not released further details on the suspect or the potential motive behind the killings.
