EAST LANSING, Mich. – A 20-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in an assault that took place in East Lansing over the weekend. Caleb Alan Shermoe, a resident of Fowlerville, passed away Thursday morning after being hospitalized for the injuries he incurred during the attack.
The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) responded to a call about a physical altercation near the intersection of East Grand River Avenue and M.A.C. Avenue around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 18. Upon arrival, officers found Shermoe, who was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The ELPD detective bureau launched an investigation, leading to the identification of a suspect. While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have confirmed that charges are being sought through the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office.
“This is an extremely tragic event,” said ELPD Lieutenant Adrian Ojerio. “Nobody comes out of this a winner, not a single person. We have worked very diligently since receiving the call to identify and locate a suspect.”
Investigators are urging anyone with information related to the incident, including video footage or witness accounts, to come forward. Lt. Ojerio emphasized the importance of community assistance in solving the case, saying, “If you see something, say something. That goes for anything suspicious, including being a witness to a fight. If you have seen this fight, maybe have video or audio, or are just a witness who would like to give a statement, we would take that information to help build a better picture of what happened.”
Those with information are asked to contact ELPD, specifically Detective Austin Nelson or Detective Jason Cotton, referencing ELPD case number 2536400169.
As the investigation continues, the community remains in shock over the tragic loss.
