Lansing Man to Receive National Heroism Commendation Award for Saving Family from House Fire

Lansing, Mich. — A Lansing man who acted heroically to save a family from a burning home is set to be honored next Saturday with the National Heroism Commendation Award by the Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (MISSAR).

On the night of October 2, 2024, Juan Antonio Cabrera witnessed his neighbor’s house on Maplewood Ave engulfed in flames. At around midnight, Cabrera, noticing that the lights in the Austin family’s home were off, feared that they might be unaware of the fire and still asleep inside. Despite the danger and the thick smoke pouring from the burning building, Cabrera immediately called 911. Without hesitation, he ran into the house, woke up the Austin family, and guided them to safety, ensuring they escaped the flames unharmed.

The Lansing Fire Department arrived shortly after and worked for approximately four to five hours to control the blaze. Thankfully, due to Cabrera’s quick and courageous actions, the Austin family escaped the fire without injury, though the danger was severe. According to the Lansing Fire Chief, had Cabrera not acted when he did, the fire could have spread to nearby homes, and the family, which included two young boys, aged 9 and 7, would have suffered from serious smoke inhalation.

Following the fire, Cabrera and his wife, Alexis, took the Austin family into their home for the night, providing them with care and comfort until they could secure temporary housing. Their generosity and compassion during a traumatic time were recognized by many, including MISSAR.

Joseph Williams, State President of MISSAR, expressed the organization’s admiration for Cabrera’s actions. “The Michigan Society of the Sons of the American Revolution is humbled and honored to recognize Juan Cabrera, Jr. with our National Heroism Commendation Medal and Certificate. His bravery and self-sacrifice in the face of imminent danger was truly extraordinary,” said Williams.

Cabrera’s story is a reminder of the profound impact one individual can have in moments of crisis, demonstrating that courage and selflessness can save lives and inspire others.
