Defending democracy: Michigan electors get police escorts Monday in Lansing

A decisive post-election drama is about to play out at the Lansing Capitol, which is closed to the public Monday. Senate and House office buildings also will be locked.

State troopers will walk with 16 Democratic Party electors from their vehicles and into to the Capitol during early afternoon because protesters will be on the steps and lawn.

The electors’ constitutional duty is to cast Electoral College votes in the Senate chamber for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, a 2 p.m. formality that will be livestreamed. Then Congress counts the electoral votes from each state Jan. 6 to end the most bizarre election ever.

In addition to armed escorts protecting the men and women representing 50.6% of the state’s Nov. 3 voters, Michigan’s 2020 election was followed by state and federal judicial rulings, tense legislative hearings and a challenge by Texas’ attorney general that the U.S. Supreme Court rebuffed Friday evening.
