Man Dies After Being Rescued from Lake Chemung in Livingston County

Brighton, MI — A man who was rescued from Lake Chemung on Wednesday afternoon has died, according to Brighton Fire Chief Michael O’Brian. The incident occurred between Howell and Brighton, where the man became trapped on the ice of the lake.

Rescue teams from the Brighton Fire Department responded to the scene after receiving a call about the man’s distress. However, as they attempted to reach him, the responders found themselves stuck on the ice as well. This prompted the involvement of the U.S. Coast Guard, who assisted in the rescue effort, according to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite the efforts of the first responders and the Coast Guard, the man ultimately passed away. The exact circumstances leading to his death remain under investigation, though officials have expressed concern about the hazardous conditions on the lake’s ice at the time.

Authorities are reminding residents to stay cautious when venturing onto frozen lakes, as conditions can change rapidly and become dangerous. The names of the man and the first responders have not been released at this time.

This incident marks another reminder of the dangers of winter sports and the unpredictability of ice-covered lakes, particularly as warmer weather begins to thaw the ice. Further details will be provided as the investigation continues.
