LANSING, Mich. — A man was shot and killed by police earlier today following a tense confrontation along US-127 near Barnes Rd. in Vevay Township. According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. when a driver called 911 to report a man walking the wrong way on the freeway.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the man walking in traffic. Authorities stated that the suspect was “non-compliant” when officers attempted to engage with him. The situation soon escalated when the man allegedly pulled out multiple knives, prompting officers to take action.

For several minutes, police attempted to de-escalate the situation, according to the sheriff’s office. However, at an undisclosed time during the encounter, officers shot the man. Despite efforts to save the suspect’s life, paramedics were unable to revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

One officer sustained injuries during the confrontation, but no other injuries have been reported. The sheriff’s office has not released the identities of either the suspect or the officers involved in the incident.

Authorities have also confirmed that US-127 remains closed in the area near Barnes Rd. as investigators work at the scene.

In response to the circulation of a video showing parts of the incident on social media, the sheriff’s office acknowledged that the suspect was not handcuffed at the time he was confronted by officers.

“This is a tragic event for all involved, and we ask for our community’s patience and prayers,” a spokesperson from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
